I watched Mani Ratnam's Iruvar(1997) in 2009 and since then it has stayed with me and is one of my favorite movie for my reasons.
First and top most reason is that it introduced me to one of the greatest actor of Indian Cinema Mohanlal (my most favorite actor now).
Secondly it made me realize how good actor Prakash Raj is (till now I had seen him in Telegu Movies in underrated roles).
Third is that it was not only written well, it had a very powerful screenplay also. Full credit to its director Mani Ratnam for a wonderfully written and executed script
Taking reference from real life of most famous political personalities of Tamil Nadu, it must have not been easy for the writer, but Mani Ratnam did a full justice to that. He gave equal importance to both the lead characters and wrote a screenplay which gave space (i mean equal space and not equal scenes) for both of them to perform their best.
Although as per story-line Prakash raj got many good scenes in the movie (and may be that's why won National award), Mohanlal with his limited role due to screenplay did a far more tremendous job as an actor (as per my opinion) in the movie.
Coming back to my favorite actor Mohanlal, he had some many brilliant shots in the movie, my personal favorite all are all scenes where Prakash and Mohanlal both are in same frame, they kind of try to outshine each other.
The scene where both the leads have a discussion and Mohanlal asks for a portfolio, the scene where Mohanlal makes a speech against his own party, or the scene where both of them meet in a function for the last time, each one of the scene has been acted and executed very well.
Iruvar's duo has what Sholey's duo did had, a more poetic, complex and real to believe friendship.
